West Asia/Middle East:
Israel’s continued assault on the Gaza Strip has led to a conservative death toll of 33,729 while other sources estimate tens of thousands more may be already killed, some buried under the rubble or and others simply unreported. A growing number of Gazans are dying of starvation and malnutrition, particularly those with critical and chronic health conditions. This week 5 were killed and dozens more injured in an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in Central Gaza. As Israel prepares for an assault on the refugee city of Rafah, some Gazans flee North to the city of Khan Younis, much of which has been reduced to rubble by Israeli forces. 1.4 million Gazans seek refuge in Rafah as world leaders warn Israel of the consequences of such an assault.
In retaliation for an Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria, the Iranian military launched a barrage of drones and missiles at the territory controlled by Israel. The barrage consisted of hundreds of drones and missiles, a number of which were shot down by Israeli, American, British, and Jordanian forces. The attack partly targeted Israel’s Nevatim Airbase, from which the attack on the Iranian consulate was conducted. 5 missiles reportedly struck the base, causing damage to a runway, a plane, and storage facilities. Iranian media also reported the deaths of dozens of Israeli Mossad agents at the Nevatim Air Base. Israel has already expressed intent to retaliate as Iran warns the assault is only a fraction of what its military is capable of.
Dozens of Israeli settlers and soldiers attacked the West Bank village of al-Mughayyir amidst the disappearance of an Israeli teen, who later turned up dead. The settlers set fires and unleashed gunfire on the village, killing one Palestinian man and injuring 25 others. 460 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the escalation of violence following October 7th.
An Israeli strike on Lebanese territory killed Hezbollah commander Ali Ahmad Hussein, a member of the elite Radwan Forces. The strike killed 3 other Hezbollah fighters amidst intense exchanges of fire at Lebanon’s southern border, including Hezbollah strikes into the occupied Golan Heights. The violence has displaced around 100,000 people and caused hundreds of casualties, both military and civilian.
Central America
The Central American nation of Nicaragua brought forth a case to the International Court of Justice accusing Germany of complicity in genocide due to its continued supply of weapons to the Israeli state. Nicaragua accused Germany of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention and urged the court to order the cessation of military aid to Israel. Germany directly denied the accusation and claimed the case lacked a legal basis.
