West Asia/Middle East:
The death toll in Gaza passes 25,000 as Israel continues its bombardment of the remaining population in the Gaza Strip. Only nine hospitals remain operational in the southern half of the strip and none in the north. The remaining hospitals lack sufficient supplies and fuel to treat the hundreds of injured daily. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, 178 bodies were brought to Gaza’s hospitals on Saturday alone. The limited entrance of humanitarian aid also means that the population is not only undertreated but also suffering from malnutrition and even starvation. The stark conditions also mean that infectious diseases are on the rise as many Gazans sleep out in the cold. 2 million people, 85% of Gazan residents, have been displaced as Israel destroys hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings. Israeli officials have not indicated ceasing hostilities, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he anticipates the “war” lasting into 2025.
The United States conducted five separate rounds of strikes in Yemen against targets of the Ansar Allah movement, also known as the Houthis. The United States and the United Kingdom began striking Houthi targets on January 12th in response to Houthi attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea. The Houthi movement vowed to attack any ships affiliated with or headed toward the state of Israel until Israel ceases its bombardment of the Gaza Strip. While United States President Biden conceded that the strikes have not stopped the Houthis’ Red Sea attacks, he vowed to continue them regardless
.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC), a branch of the Iranian armed forces, conducted several strikes in the Kurdistan region of Iraq where it claimed to have targeted an Israeli Mossad intelligence base, killing one Mossad agent. Iran also struck targets in Syria and Iraq, aiming to impede the ability of militant groups to carry out attacks against Iran, following an ISIS suicide bombing that killed nearly 100 people in the Iranian city of Kerman. The IRGC struck Islamic State (ISIS) and other anti-Iranian targets in Northern Syria and targeted a Sunni militant group in Pakistan near the Iranian border. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, saying the strikes killed two children.
An Israeli strike on a building in the Syrian capital of Damascus killed five Iranian military advisors, according to Syrian and Iranian media. The Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the strike, stating that their “blood… will not be wasted.
”
Europe:
Artillery shelling of a market in the Russian-held city of Donetsk killed 27 people and injured 25 others, according to local authorities. The Russian Foreign Ministry blamed the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the attack and called for international condemnation of the strike. United Nations Secretary-General strongly condemned all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, “including [the] shelling of the city of Donetsk in Ukraine.
”
North America:
In its first vote regarding Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, the United States Senate struck down a resolution requiring the State Department to deliver a report to Congress on Israel’s alleged violations of human rights. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders proposed the legislation that invoked an unused provision in the Foreign Assistance Act but was shot down in a vote of 72-11
