Ground fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas militants has intensified in Northern Gaza as Israel attempts to push toward the heart of Gaza City, with casualty figures unknown. The fighting caused large numbers of civilians to evacuate to the south of the strip while many others stayed behind. Meanwhile, Israel’s bombardment of the entirety of the Gaza Strip has pushed the number of civilians killed to 11,180, with over 28,000 injured, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
Gaza’s hospitals entered a state of dire crisis this week as fuel supplies dwindle and Israeli strikes continue. Gaza City’s Al Shifa Hospital reported the deaths of 3 newborns as its incubators stopped functioning due to a lack of electricity. Other hospitals in Gaza, such as Al Quds, are no longer operational

After pressure from its ally, the United States, Israel agreed to daily 4-hour pauses in Northern Gaza to allow civilians to flee. Israel previously told all 1.1 million residents of Northern Gaza to leave to the south of the strip, a task the United Nations called impossible.
Five hundred more dual nationals and several wounded Palestinians were evacuated from Gaza through the Rafah Border Crossing under a deal brokered by Qatar. Limited aid deliveries and evacuees have all occurred through the Rafah Border Crossing with Egypt, the only crossing point not controlled by Israel.
Belgium’s deputy prime minister called for sanctions against Israel and investigations into its strikes on hospitals and refugee camps. Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter called Israel’s bombardment of Gaza “inhumane” and stressed the need for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the bombings.

Clashes in the West Darfur region amidst Sudan’s war between the Army and paramilitary forces have sparked fears of renewed horrors of ethnic violence. Recent fighting left 700 dead in West Darfur, an area that has been hit particularly hard by Sudan’s internal war, which has now stretched past the 7-month mark.
